Prabowo Subianto and Papua New Guinea PM Sit Together, Discuss Bilateral Partnership

Port Moresby – Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto conducted an official visit to Papua New Guinea, where he held a meeting with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape on Wednesday (21/8).

During the meeting, Prabowo and Marape discussed various issues, ranging from bilateral and international matters of mutual interest to steps that could be taken to further strengthen the strategic partnership that has long existed between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

“We (Indonesia and Papua New Guinea) have synergy. We complement each other, and there are many things that can be done in the sectors of food production, agriculture, fisheries, mining, minerals, and tourism. Indonesia looks forward to more cooperation with Papua New Guinea,” Prabowo explained.

In the education sector, Prabowo offered opportunities for Papua New Guinean youths to study at the Indonesian Defense University (Unhan). “I have also informed your defense minister that we are opening all military schools and institutions. If you want to send your young generation, we would be honored,” he added.

Meanwhile, Marape expressed his appreciation for Prabowo’s commitment to fostering peace and reconciliation, as well as continuing several programs initiated by President Joko Widodo.

He further noted that the relationship between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea has significantly improved, leading to positive outcomes and new opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.

“The walls that once limited the relationship between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia have now come down, opening up business opportunities between us, and cross-border movement, both of people and goods, has improved,” Marape concluded. (RR)
