Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day holds a significant meaning beyond just a ceremonial event. In line with this spirit, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program was introduced as a tangible step towards achieving independence in the realm of nutrition. This program, far from being a mere food assistance initiative, is viewed as an investment in Indonesia’s future, particularly focusing on the well-being and potential of the nation’s children.
Deputy for Dissemination and Media Information, Noudhy Valdryno, emphasized the importance of the MBG program, highlighting the impact it has on millions of schoolchildren, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers nationwide. The provision of nutritious meals not only enhances children’s concentration and academic performance but also supports their physical growth and brain development. The long-term vision for MBG is to lay a solid foundation for nurturing an exceptional generation that aligns with Indonesia Emas 2045, the nation’s vision for prosperity on its centennial anniversary.
Recognized as an effective long-term investment, the MBG program has garnered praise from international organizations, with the School Meals Coalition acknowledging its significance for countries like Indonesia. With over eight million beneficiaries to date, including students from various educational institutions, pregnant women, and toddlers, MBG has already begun to show measurable benefits. Expert Ikeu Tanziha from the National Nutrition Council (BGN) highlighted improved Body Mass Index (BMI) among children and adolescents in participating regions, along with enhanced classroom concentration and cognitive abilities.
In addition to its health and educational outcomes, the MBG program has also spurred economic growth by creating job opportunities and supporting small businesses that supply program ingredients. Suratina, a grandmother working at an MBG kitchen in Yogyakarta Special Region, shared her gratitude for the work that not only provides her with income but also brings a sense of fulfillment and community. Overall, the MBG program stands as a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to achieving independence in all aspects, including nutrition, education, and economic empowerment.
