President Joko Widodo has recently appointed General Tandyo Budi as the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and also introduced six new Regional Military Command (Kodam) commanders, 20 brigade commanders, and 100 Territorial Development Battalions. During the appointment ceremony, President Joko Widodo awarded the prestigious Bintang Sakti Medal of Honor to soldiers who have shown exceptional integrity.
In his address, President Joko Widodo emphasized the importance of leadership by stating, “I have appointed commanders — brigade commanders, battalion commanders. Those selected as leaders must lead from the front.” He stressed the role of military leaders as the first line of defense for their soldiers in risky situations.
President Joko Widodo firmly rejected the idea of leaders staying behind the lines, stating, “No troop commander leads from the rear. Leaders lead from the front. Leaders set the example. A leader is the best soldier.” He encouraged military leaders to treat and train their troops with care, like their own children.
In closing, President Joko Widodo reminded the military leaders of the TNI’s identity and mission, stating, “Always remember, we are the people’s army. We serve the people, defend the people, and are ready to sacrifice for the people. That is the TNI.” The appointment ceremony highlights the commitment of the TNI leaders to lead by example and prioritize the well-being and training of their troops.
