General Sudirman, the first Commander of the TNI, has left a remarkable legacy for the future generations of TNI soldiers. Born in Purbalingga on January 24, 1916, Sudirman was initially an elementary school teacher in Solo. He played a significant role in the formation of the PETA (Defenders of the Homeland) during the Indonesian Independence movement. As a battalion leader, he led his forces in various offensives against the British forces, eventually driving them out of central Java and solidifying Indonesian control.
During a Dutch surprise attack on Yogyakarta in 1948, General Sudirman, despite suffering from severe tuberculosis, advocated for guerrilla warfare against the enemy. While the President and other leaders chose a different path, Sudirman’s decision to lead the resistance boosted the morale of the nation and the TNI eventually emerged victorious.
